20 UK Artists Absolutely Killin’ It in 2013

Bloc Party New(1)

A band that precedes introduction–Bloc Party. (Fun fact: Totally had a crush on drummer Matt Tong, far right, in 8th grade.)

Without a doubt, 2012 and 2013 thus far have seen some pretty good music coming out of many corners of the world–take the new musics from the likes of Daft Punk (Random Access Memories, France), Empire of the Sun (Ice on the Dune, Australia), and Capital Cities (In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, Los Angeles). However, there leaves something to be said about the influx of seriously dope tracks by artists, bands, DJs, and kid-duos hailing from the great land of the Brits invading my playlists and musical landscape.

Spanning my most recent UK addictions (read: fandoms) spinning deep house, indie/alt rock, synthpop, downtempo beats, just to sample–this is a relatively young list with cats like Rizzle Kicks and Disclosure, but it also lends street cred with house names like Bloc Party, Bonobo, and MIA, who’ve all had new music out this year and last! In any case, check out some of the jamz of the moment I’m crushing on and maybe find a track you like. So, in no particular order…

  1. Jessie Ware, “Wildest Moments (acoustic)
  2. Disclosure, “Need U 100% (Cover) ft. Sam Smith
  3. Rizzle Kicks, Mayer Hawthorne – “The Walk (Explicit) ft. Rizzle Kicks” (Cheating a bit, but this song’s got the grooves.)
  4. Daughter, “Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)
  5. Alunageorge, “You Know You Like It
  6. Sampha, “Indecision
  7. Rudimental, “Baby
  8. Bonobo, North Borders album
  9. Stumbleine, a mix of songs by Stumbleine
  10. Muse, Origin of Symmetry album (always appropriate)
  11. Gorillaz, “Dare
  12. Foals, “Inhaler
  13. Foxes, “White Coats
  14. Snakehips, “On & On
  15. Chase and Status, “Lost & Not Found ft. Louis M^ttrs
  16. Sam Smith, “Lay Me Down
  17. Two Door Cinema Club, um, their entire Beacon album
  18. Duke Dumont, “No Money Blues
  19. MIA, “Bring the Noize
  20. Bloc Party, “Truth” and “Ratchet

Any favorites or other suggestions? Do let me know! On a side note, anyone else down to move to London for the music scene? 😉 L
